Lizzy Swick Nutrition Counseling: The Coach's Corner | Self-Care During the Busy Holiday Season to Stay True to Your Health Goals

Life can feel overwhelming, especially during the holiday season or when multiple events and responsibilities collide. Especially when you’re working on building new habits and routines for your health, this time of holiday stress can amplify tension already present in your life, leading to self-sabotage, skipped workouts, and indulging in more junk food than intended. It’s easy to feel like you’re moving in the opposite direction of your goals. Yes meditation, affirmations, breathing, letting go are great tools but I feel like communication is a must for optimal self-care.

Why Communication is Key

One of the most powerful tools to navigate healthy boundaries is communication. Speaking your needs, sharing your health goals, or even simply expressing your feelings—whether to others or just to yourself—can be transformative. Communicating isn’t just about being heard; it’s about creating clarity, setting healthy boundaries, and reducing the guilt we often impose on ourselves.

How To Work Through Feelings Of Guilt

Communicating With Yourself:

Take a moment to remind yourself that this season is different. It’s okay if your daily routines don’t look the same. Affirm to yourself that you can adapt and still thrive, even if your schedule shifts or your habits evolve temporarily.

Communicating With Others:

Saying “no” to events, commitments, or traditions that don’t align with your goals is an act of self-care, not selfishness. Expressing your limitations helps others understand your needs and fosters mutual respect. Most people will relate and appreciate your honesty more than you think. Expressing feelings is truly such good self-care.

For example, if attending an event feels overwhelming, simply explain your reasoning. Setting boundaries can prevent burnout and ensure you show up for the commitments that truly matter.

Shifting Perspective and Letting Go of Guilt

We often feel pressure to do it all, which creates unnecessary guilt when we can’t. However, by practicing clear communication, we allow space for understanding as well as vulnerability—both from ourselves and those around us.

If something feels misaligned, acknowledge it. Whether it’s skipping an annual volunteering opportunity you typically enjoy or modifying your usual fitness routine, trust that it’s okay to adjust your expectations. Remind yourself that temporary changes don’t equate to failure this holiday season.

Flexibility and Alignment

The key to thriving during all the holiday stress is flexibility:

  • Be open to shifting routines and trying new approaches.
  • Let go of perfection and embrace progress.
  • Choose what aligns with your current needs and desires, even if it means breaking away from “norms.”

For instance, if your usual workout schedule doesn’t fit, find small ways to stay active—like a 15-minute walk or a quick home session. If your meal plan isn’t realistic during the holidays, focus on balance instead of restriction.

The Power of Support and Tools

There are countless tools and resources, like apps, coaches, and communities, to keep you grounded and accountable. But ultimately, peace comes from within. When life moves at its fastest pace, the ability to stay centered and communicate your needs becomes invaluable.

A Personal Inspiration

I’ve witnessed the impact of strong communication and boundary-setting firsthand through someone close to me. Their ability to express needs and set clear limits without guilt inspired me to improve my own communication skills. It’s a reminder that learning how to say what you mean and honoring your truth can remove the extra pressure we often place on ourselves.

Final Thoughts

During busy seasons—whether it’s the holidays or simply a chaotic chapter of life—practice communicating clearly and authentically. Choose peace, flexibility, and alignment with your goals. These are examples of healthy boundaries. Be okay with adapting and remind yourself that self-care is not selfish. Life will always throw challenges your way, but staying grounded, open to change, and honest with yourself and others is priceless.

By embracing this approach, you’ll find balance and empowerment, no matter how fast life moves.

In health,

Coach Yeni
